SNOWFLAKE
Written by Mike Bartlett
Directed by Jo Bradley
An AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE
A play for anyone who has ever had a fight about politics at family Christmas.
Andy hasn’t spoken to his twenty-something daughter, Maya, since she moved out and cut him off three years ago. Now it’s Christmas Eve, and the widower is desperate to have his daughter back in his life. In a last-ditch effort to reunite his family, Andy hires a town hall, decorates it for Christmas and invites Maya. Will she show?
Snowflake is an Australian premiere from prolific British playwright Mike Bartlett (Albion, King Charles III), directed by recent NIDA graduate Jo Bradley (SEEN, Young Bodies/Somebody’s). Inspired by the division caused by the 2016 Brexit referendum, Snowflake asks the universal issue: how do you maintain family relationships when you disagree about politics?
Although inspired by Brexit, Bartlett’s writing transcends that specific conflict, and will resonate with anyone who has ever had a fight about politics at a family Christmas. Snowflake is an intimate and bittersweet story about generational conflict, fathers and daughters, and how we talk about politics in the 21st century.
“A poignant story of an estranged father and daughter that becomes a much wider study of generational conflict” – The Guardian
“Startlingly relatable for anyone who has had parents” – Variety
“A provocative and tender vision of divided Britain that suggests there is no way forward if we don’t try to understand each other”. – Time Out
